GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers capped one of the best seasons in team history with a 1-0 victory over the Fond du Lac Bears in the championship game of the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament yesterday. The Don Kohlman Cup returns to the Copper Country for the first time since the Pios won back-to-back tournaments in 2015 and 2016.
After routing the Sun Prairie Killer Bees 22-1 Friday, the Pioneers won their pool with an 8-1 win over the Fox Cities Ice Dogs Saturday, then dispatched the Ice Dogs again in the semifinals 11-5.
The Calumet Wolverines split their pool games Friday – defeating the Mosinee Papermakers 5-4, and falling to the Bears 8-0 – and did not advance to the semifinals.
The Pioneers and Wolverines will conclude their seasons this weekend with the annual Gibson Cup tournament. Game one will be played Thursday at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. Game two will take place Friday at the Colosseum. If needed, game three will be staged Saturday at the Dee. All the games will be broadcast on KBear 102.3.
College Hockey
Western Michigan University has reached the Frozen Four. The Broncos edged Massachusetts 2-1 Saturday to win the Fargo regional. The Broncos will face Boston University in a semifinal game April 10th. The Terriers ousted Cornell 3-2 to win the Toledo Regional.
Denver and Penn State will play in the other semifinal. The Nittany Lions dispatched Connecticut 3-2 in their quarterfinal match yesterday. The Pioneers upended top-seed Boston College 3-1.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Blues tomorrow.
NBA
The Pistons fell 123-104 to the Timberwolves last evening. With Cade Cunningham still on the sideline, Malik Beasley led Detroit with 27 points. Jalen Duren had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Dennis Schröder added 11 points and 11 assists.
The Pistons will visit the Thunder Wednesday.
Seven players were ejected from last night’s game after a second-quarter brawl. The melee began after Ron Holland II fouled Minnesota’s Naz Reid on a layup attempt. Holland, Isaiah Stewart, Marcus Sasser and head coach J.B. Bickerstaff were ejected for Detroit.
The Bucks dropped a 145-124 decision to the Hawks last night. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 31.
The Bucks entertain the Suns tomorrow night.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and visit the Mariners tonight. Jackson Jobe will start against Emerson Hancock. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers fell to the Yankees 12-3 yesterday. Starter Aaron Civale lasted just three innings, and was charged with five runs. He left the game with a hamstring cramp, and will be evaluated today. Jake Bauers homered for Milwaukee. In their three-game season-opening series in New York, Milwaukee gave up 36 runs, and served up 15 home runs.
The Brewers welcome the Royals for their home opener this afternoon. Elvin Rodriguez will pitch against Kris Bubic.
