College Basketball
For the second year in a row, Marcus Tomashek has earned the Ken Hamar Award as the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team’s most valuable player. In his junior season, Tomashek averaged 23 points per game, as the Huskies won the regular-season Great lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. Redshirt freshman Gabe Smith earned the Bill Gappy Award, as the team’s most improved player. For the third consecutive year, Josh Terrian earned the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award. Freshman guard Ty Fernholz earned the Bob Olson Outstanding Newcomer Award, after averaging nearly 11 points per game, and leading the team in three-point percentage.
College Hockey
Six Michigan Tech hockey players could be moving on to other teams. Forward Logan Morrell is the highest profile player to enter the transfer portal. He was named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Rookie team this past season. Other Huskies considering potential new homes include forwards Henry Bartle, Philip Fankl and Quinn Disher, along with defensemen Matthew Campbell and Nick Williams.
Twelve Northern Michigan hockey players have entered the portal, along with two from Lake Superior State.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Blues tonight.
NBA
The Pistons will visit the Thunder tomorrow.
The Bucks entertain the Suns tonight.
MLB
The Tigers exploded for six runs in the first inning, and held off the Mariners 9-6 last night. Riley Greene’s two-run homer started the party. The early advantage helped out starter Jackson Jobe, who gave up three runs over four innings. Tyler Holton was awarded the win in relief.
After claiming their first win of the season, the Tigers play in Seattle again this evening. Casey Mize will start against Logan Gilbert. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has placed second baseman Gleyber Torres on the injured list with a left oblique strain. Justyn-Henry Malloy has been brought up from Toledo to fill in.
The Brewers suffered another lopsided loss yesterday, falling 11-1 to the Royals in their home opener. K.C. torched Elvin Rodriguez for four runs over four innings. Three Kansas City pitchers held Milwaukee to just six hits.
In four games this season, the Brewers have been outscored 47-15. They’ll host the Royals again this evening. Chad Patrick will pitch against Michael Lorenzen.
Milwaukee added starter Aaron Civale to the injured list yesterday. He left Sunday’s game with a strained hamstring. Grant Anderson has been called up from Nashville. The Brewers now have six pitchers sidelined by injury or illness.
NFL
Former Lions defensive end John Cominsky is ending his career. Cominsky spent the last three seasons in the Motor City. He’s just 29, but said the he made the decision because of numerous injuries.
