High School
Most of last night’s high school games were called off because of the weather.
The Houghton doubleheader at Jeffers was played…
- The Houghton girls pulled out a 54-49 victory. The Jets led by a point at halftime, and sank a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to shrink the Gremlins’ late lead to just two points. Tessa Rautiola sank one free throw, and Eva Gerard netted two in the closing seconds to seal the win.
- The Houghton boys grabbed an early lead, and cruised to a 77-34 victory. Luke Hill led the Gremlins with 19 points, Isaiah Lawson and Lane Laux each added 14, Josef Eich scored 10.
In the only other game played in our region, the Forest Park boys outscored North Dickinson 47-36.

- Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Ironwood to make up last night’s postponement.

One student-athlete from the Copper Country has qualified as a finalist for a MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award. Joshua Gaunt from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City is one of eight boys finalists in Class D. Two will eventually be selected.
To be eligible for the award, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 and previously have won a varsity letter in at least one sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament. Students also were asked to respond to a series of short essay questions and submit two letters of recommendation and a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.
NHL
The Red Wings lost their third straight game last night, 2-1 to the Flyers in overtime. Ben Chiarot scored Detroit’s only goal. Rasmus Ristolainen netted the game-winner with 26 seconds remaining in overtime. Alex Lyon made 24 saves.
The Wings welcome the Canadiens tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

- Ichiro Suzuki, the outfielder who, at age 27, became the first player to transition from Japan to the United States. Despite his late start, in 19 seasons – mostly with the Mariners – Suzuki batted .311, 3,089 hits and 509 stolen bases.
- CC Sabathia, the durable left-handed starter, who pitched 3,577⅓ innings over 19 seasons. He won 251 games and struck out 3,093 batters for Cleveland, Milwaukee and the New York Yankees.
- Closer Billy Wagner, who made the cut in his final year on the ballot. Wagner earned 422 saves over 16 seasons with the Astros, Phillies, New Mets, Red Sox and Braves.
Dick Allen and Dave Parker will also join the Hall next summer. They were elected by the Classic Baseball Era Committee in December.
NFL
There are numerous reports that the Jets have made a ‘substantial offer’ to Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to become their next head coach. Glenn also has an interview scheduled with the Saints later this week.
Former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was formally introduced yesterday as the new head coach of the Bears.
