State Rep. Greg Markkanen is hailing the legislative compromises reached this week on pay for tipped workers and sick time for all employees.
The minimum hourly wage for tipped workers will remain at 38 percent of the minimum wage for now, but will increase to 50 percent by 2031. It increases penalties for employers who do not compensate their employees legally.
All workers will be guaranteed some paid sick leave, but employers will have several plans from which they can choose. The law also addresses “no call, no show” incidents, and provides some protection from what Markkanen described as “baseless lawsuits and other attacks from left-wing activists.”
The compromise forestalls implementation of previously-adopted rules that Markkanen says would have placed too heavy a burden on small businesses.
